HEMANGIOMA

For the check out girl at the grocery store, random people at the mall, and everyone else who constantly asks "What happened to her face?" (at which point I have to hold back asking "What happened to YOURS?")

At birth there were no signs. It started a few days after we brought her home, and was this size at 2 weeks. It has since become raised, but thankfully only a little.

A hemangioma is an abnormal buildup of blood vessels in the skin or internal organs.

This periorbital hemangioma will most likely go away on its on by school age, if not much sooner.

Yes, I am aware that some crazy mothers have a dermatologist take a laser to their young children, but I really see that as only being vanity on the parents part since Alyssa obviously isn't bothered by it. Of course if it was causing problems with vision, that would be different.

I have a healthy child, and am not at all concerned with a birth mark.

2 Months Old!

Our second born daughter is already 2 months old! I already can't remember life without her. She is the sweetest baby ever, I'm so lucky to be her mom.
She is taking only formula now, sleeping very well and in her crib (only waking once)
Smiling and talking all day long
At her 2 month check-up she was 11lbs 7oz (50th percentile) and 23 inches (75th percentile)
Happy 2 months baby girl!

twins born 3 years apart...

Please Lord don't let me get their baby pictures confused....probably why he blessed Alyssa with her hemangioma!

One expensive trip to the Velveteen Rabbit...

I have a new obsession with dressing my girls alike.
And taking pictures of them dressed alike.
I am in constant awe of how sweet and easy going our Alyssa is.
Our days are going by so fast and I wish I could slow life down...

Sleep.

I am determined to get Emma to go to sleep by herself at night, her DADDY had spoiled her and would snuggle with her until she fell asleep (while I was at work). She got used to this routine and now we have to lay with her for 30+minutes until she falls asleep. It is too hard putting two girls to bed now by myself and do this, so I posted on facebook and got some good suggestions and came up with one of my own. It's called bribery and no I'm not ashamed. It just isn't right for her newborn sister to be the better sleeper!! It worked for nap time, wish us luck tonight!!

And I would also like to say that I deserve some kind of award for getting two girls and myself fed, dressed and out the door by 9am for church this morning! I even managed to get some pictures...
(she was not in the mood)

And this is from last week, but I love to have pictures of me and my girls :)

Hey HO-HO!!

Tuesday night we put the girls in their matching gymboree dresses and took them to see Santa! They both did great. It didn't surprise me because Emma is not scared of anyone, but her outgoing-ness is a post all its own. We let Emma sit and chat for a bit after the picture because there was hardly anyone there, and then she went to go play in the "snow". She kept running out of the snow globe to Santa and saying "HEY Ho-Ho, THIS IS MY DANCY DANCE MOVE" as she did her best arabasque for Santa, she didn't request anything specific...just pink presents and more baby dolls (NOT happening!!)
So I'm pretty sure I'm the coolest mom ever for ordering this online at 3am today...

I can't wait for cyber monday, so much better than black friday!! I did venture out to target at 9am with both girls by myself. It wasn't very crowded and I was lucky to find the toy my nephew had asked for at 40% off still there, in the wrong spot! I am really looking forward to Christmas because Emma has such a good imagination this year and just can't stop talking about it.

One Month and 3 Years

Last week we celebrated two birthdays!! Our sweet Emma turned 3 years old, you wouldn't believe the personality on this kid. She is talking up a storm, and I love that I can have a full conversation with her...and I'm very excited we are able to reason with her now! She is little Miss Independent and does everything by herself...even if we are running late and it takes her 10 minutes to put on her backpack, she is so determined! Emma has really taken well to her new big sister role and is such a good helper, we were a little worried but she is very gentle and loving to her. It's nice to have someone fetching diapers and wipes this time :) She is always singing or dancing wherever we are, even in target. She is all girl and I just love it!
Alyssa is one month old...she is sleeping/eating/pooping. She has started to smile at me when she is awake and alert too! She is a great baby, and I am really enjoying her newborn-ness!!
We are so lucky to have two healthy girls :)

A Birth Story.

Alyssa is 1 month old, so I figure it is past time to post about the night she was born :)

Sunday afternoon after church, around 1:30pm my wonderful, and amazingly sweet doctor stripped my membranes (for the 3rd time), I was 39 weeks and 6 days and about 6cm. Contractions started slowly, but this time each contraction was getting a little stronger...around 5pm I told Dr. T about the frequency of the contractions and she said it was time for me to head on into the hospital...so first I went to the grocery store (because we couldn't come home from the hospital with no bread!!).
Walking around the store I was contracting every 4 minutes and gripping the shopping cart...it was getting to the point I had to stop talking/walking. We came back to the house, put the groceries away and got Emma packed and ready. We drove from hickory to portsmouth, dropped Emma off at church where her grandparents were and then headed to the hospital...it was about 7:30 when I got in the hospital room. Room 2225, same room Emma was born in, and my nephew Alex. The secretary that night that admitted me said "you're still smiling so this can't be it" pssssh...I was just so happy to finally be having this baby!!
So in walks my nurse, my coworker. I get put on the monitor, she waits to see what kind of contraction pattern I'm in...20 minutes later she checks me, a little discouraged at her exam but educated enough to know that it's subjective. My close friend Meganne joins me and my husband, I'm still smiling between contractions and coping very well...we start to walk the halls and my nurse gets the jacuzzi tub ready. I am laughing as we walk the halls...we visit with my sweet coworkers in the nursery and on postpartum. We get back to the room and in the tub I go...so relaxing.
I started to fall asleep a little between contractions while I was in the tub. All of a sudden I FEEL a pop. It was such a strange feeling, I called for my husband and Meganne and as I got out and was drying off...the fluid kept pouring out! After that, there was no more smiling or napping, the pain of the contractions intensified and I knew it was getting real. It was about 9:45 then, back on the monitor and another exam. Dr T called, and she arrived shortly after that...and never left again until after the birth.
So with my amazing husband by my side and holding my hand I labored, and labored. At some point my parents arrived, my sister arrived and my sister in law too. I can't remember what time it was but I believe I was 7cm...I asked for pain medication. 1 hour later I asked for it again...it took the edge off of the pain. Dr T came in and out a few times, I remember her saying how great Alyssa looked and how well everything was going.
I got checked around 1:25ish and was 8-9 by my nurses exam...I was so upset. I just knew I was closer and the pain had taken on a whole new level! I was asking for another dose of pain meds, even knowing I couldn't have anymore hehe The nurse stepped out, went to the desk and called Dr T. In that time I had gotten on my hands and knees for all of 10sec and I could feel the baby drop, and so I screamed I HAVE TO PUSH! I screamed so loud that Dr T heard it through the phone :)
So then my anxiety sets in, more like panic. My husband was amazing and stayed right by my side, without him I couldn't have done it. He said that after I turned over from hands and knees he could already see the top of her head and he was thinking the doctor wouldn't make it even from the call room. I think I was had the panic attack because it all was happening so fast...it was just unreal.
So everything is ready, everyone is there and I start to push...the first set wasn't so great because I had just lost control. But a few more (I think 2 more) and her head was out. Her shoulders weren't coming so easy, my legs went way back and I could feel Dr T trying to help her...I took a deep breath and gathered all my strength and she was all out!! 1:33am! and everyone in portsmouth heard me scream, pretty sure I scared the patient next door and she may have decided to not get her induction that morning and go home, or at least get an epidural.
They placed her on my chest and all I could think was "This is a huge baby!" We had a few minutes of bonding but I was shaking so to the warmer she went...all 9lbs and 7oz!
I got all fixed up, my blood pressure was low and I had had some heavy bleeding...very heavy.
I nursed my big baby for an hour...I felt so dizzy and tired that even holding her seemed hard. She went to the nursery and I got up to try to get a shower. Well I made it to the toilet but then my vision was going and I knew I was about to pass out...so my nurse and husband lowered me to the bathroom floor (glamorous I know). I can't remember how long I was down there, my husband was beside me and my sweet nurse was giving me a bird bath since there was no way I could shower.
I got to my new room, and for what felt like forever I couldn't get up by myself, couldn't stand while holding my own baby and just felt like crap. They told me my hemoglobin had gone from 12 to 8.1, the next time it was drawn it was down to 6.7.
I had pulled my IV out the night before because I couldn't sleep with it, so in went a new IV and 2units of blood. Eventually I got back to normal, and I'm just so thankful everything went well!
I am especially thankful to Dr T, who wasn't on call and had to be at work the next morning (and it was her sons birthday the 17th!!) but still came in to take care of me...It was such a relief know she was there, she even brought me a pumpkin spice latte the next day! (Monarch Women's Wellness is a great practice with wonderful providers!!)
And to my husband...he was such a great support, I'd be lost without him.

I don't want to forget...

Driving home from Sams club listening to you sing praise songs, the lyrics "God has great big plans, cuz he's watching over you" were playing. Then the song was over and it was quiet for a second and you said
"Mommy, I've got big plans"
I know you do sweet Emma, and I can't wait to see all that God has in store for your life!!

Embarrassing Mommy moment of the week…

I absolutely love my daughters outgoing personality, she loves to chat with anyone who is ever next to us.

Take tonight for instance…We headed to Chik-fil-a to have dinner (since Daddy is working very late) because they were hosting a fundraiser for a local family who recently lost their father/husband.  Typical Emma, she made friends with the little girls at the play-place and had 40 minutes of giggling girl fun! Then came time to trade in her toy for icecream (because you can do that at chik-fil-a, and it’s awesome), we took it outside to enjoy. The table next to us had an older couple with a small dog having dinner, Emma quickly befriended them and gave their sweet puppy lots of attention-with their permission first. All was good, until out of NOWHERE, Emma reaches onto the ladies plate and grabs some croutons from her salad!!!! Red faced, embarassed me ran to her and made her apologize. Not to mention the three other families out there burst out laughing. I’m just thankful it was such a nice woman and she wasn’t phased and refused my offer to buy her another salad. I sat Emma down and told her taking food off of someones plate was a no-no, and I think I apologized to the woman 5 times.

I’m not sure but I think that may beat the time she yelled out anatomically correct terms for her girly parts in target.

Pregnancy is going great, Alyssa moves so much and is doing some serious growing! We purchased her crib tonight, $200 for a $440 crib, I love sales! I just need to find a bedding set that I love that is not crazy overpriced.

there’s never a day off in this house!

IMG_1147

Emma is usually a great little helper around the house, I love that she asks to participate in any chore I happen to be doing. Her favorites are to load the laundry into the wash, vacuum, sweep, dust and wipe the kitchen table.

But sometimes….

You try to take a shower and then come out to “Mommy I colored the walls!” She was so proud of herself and I almost felt guilty for putting her in timeout…but ballpoint pen on my foyer walls is just not OKAY!! I will be repainting the foyer and hallway this week because nothing removed it and I ended up scrubbing the paint off of the wall…Oooo toddlers.

Today we went to the aquarium with Tiffany and Hunter, I can’t believe that he will be ONE tomorrow. I have loved being a part of his life, and watching him grow! I got to be present for his birth and I know we will be at his high school graduation and wedding one day. He is family to us and we love him so much!
